Sweet Baby
Does EXACTLY what you think they do.

Updated 10/04/2024 - New information gets added to the bottom.

Kim Belair, Co-Founder of Sweet Baby Inc, openly discusses her strategy for pressuring game studio executives to censor, modify, and "diversify" projects she finds problematic. She describes this approach as "terrifying them," essentially using the threat of backlash from cancel culture.

The Sweet Baby Inc. controversy centers around a narrative development and consultation company that focuses on promoting diversity and inclusion in video games.

Sweet Baby Inc., founded in 2018 in Montreal by former Ubisoft developers, aims to enhance narrative depth and diversity in video games. They've worked on major titles like "Spider-Man 2," "God of War: Ragnarok," and "Alan Wake II," offering services like story consultation, sensitivity reading, and cultural consultation.

Chris Kindred, an employee of Sweet Baby Inc., attempted to get the Steam Curator group "Sweet Baby Inc. Detected" and its creator, Kabrutus, banned from the platform. This action was part of a broader controversy where Kindred and other Sweet Baby Inc. employees engaged with or called attention to the curator group, which was set up to identify and critique games that Sweet Baby Inc. had worked on. This group faced false accusations of harassment and Sweet Baby employees attempted to get it removed, which instead drew more attention to the group.

Sweet Baby Inc. from a Gamer's Perspective

Sweet Baby Inc. is a narrative development studio that has made a name for itself by "helping game developers create stories" that prioritize diversity and representation. Gamers hold a variety of views on Sweet Baby Inc.'s influence, some of which are more critical. From a gamer's standpoint, Sweet Baby Inc. is a controversial player in the game industry, with its work interpreted through various lenses—ranging from positive innovation in storytelling to forced political correctness.

Sweet Baby Inc. partners with game studios, ranging from indie developers to AAA publishers, to craft narratives that reflect underrepresented voices and experiences. This could mean creating more diverse characters, embedding real-world social issues into the story, or ensuring that different cultural backgrounds are represented accurately. They often take on roles that go beyond just narrative consulting, working on the actual story structure, dialogue writing, and character development.

Many gamers view Sweet Baby Inc.'s involvement in games as a push for political correctness or an intrusion of social justice themes into a medium they see primarily as entertainment. These players might argue that games are escapism and do not need to reflect real-world social issues or promote an agenda. There are certain narratives are forced into games where they don't belong or are handled clumsily, disrupting the immersion or fun factor.

Many criticize games for "shoehorning" diverse characters into roles that feel unnatural or tokenistic, as though diversity is being prioritized over good storytelling. They argue that when diversity becomes the focus, it can compromise other narrative aspects like pacing, character arcs, or coherence within the game's world.

In some cases, these critics feel that the work of companies like Sweet Baby Inc. contributes to a cultural shift where developers prioritize inclusivity over gameplay mechanics, innovation, or player satisfaction. For them, gaming should be an escape from reality, not a mirror of social struggles. These sentiments often appear in online forums, where gamers express frustration over games they feel have become too political.

Regardless of where individual gamers stand, Sweet Baby Inc.'s influence on the industry is undeniable. Their work reflects a shift in how games are being made and who they're being made for. Historically, games have been created out of the imaginations of creatives with fun as the focus.

The forced injection of Diversity Equity and inclusion however has been churinga out failure after failure and firms like this are why that's the case.

outlines nicely how they work.

Look at how Sweet Baby operates. They aren’t the problem. The real issue is stakeholders hiring them to sell out to ESG.

Kim shows how they push unqualified hires, prioritize people of color, and claim gaming isn’t a meritocracy. This isn’t capitalism—it’s socialism. Insane! pic.twitter.com/xH7aNEX4ME
